Chatbots for Education Use Cases & Benefits
Authentic learning happens when a person is trying to do or figure out something that they care about — much more so than the problem sets or design challenges that we give them as part of their coursework. It’s in those moments that learners could benefit from a timely piece of advice or feedback, or a suggested “move” or method to try. So I’m currently working on what I call a “cobot” — a hybrid between a rule-based and an NLP bot chatbot — that can collaborate with humans when they need it and as they pursue their own goals. You can picture it as a sidekick in your pocket, one that has been trained at the d.school, has “learned” a large number of design methods, and is always available to offer its knowledge to you.
Chatbots have been found to play various roles in educational contexts, which can be divided into four roles (teaching agents, peer agents, teachable agents, and peer agents), with varying degrees of success (Table 6, Fig. 6). Exceptionally, a chatbot found in (D’mello & Graesser, 2013) is both a teaching and motivational agent. Hobert and Meyer von Wolff (2019), Pérez et al. (2020), and Hwang and Chang (2021) examined the evaluation methods used to assess the effectiveness of educational chatbots.
The satisfaction levels in the LEX dimension may also depend on the chatbots’ design relative to students’ levels, with significant differences observed among the four AICs. For example, while Buddy.ai is oriented towards developing oral skills in children at a lower level, John Bot and Andy are designed for vocabulary and grammar building through role-playing interactions at more intermediate levels. Participants were third-year-college students enrolled in two subjects on Applied Linguistics taught over the course of 4 months, with two-hour sessions being held twice a week. Both Applied Linguistics courses are integral components of the Teacher Education degree programs at the respective universities in Spain and the Czech Republic. These participants were being trained to become English language teachers, and the learning module on chatbot integration into language learning was strategically incorporated into the syllabus of both subjects, taught by the researchers. The choice of Spain and the Czech Republic was primarily based on convenience sampling.
They possess the ability to generate text, create diverse creative content, and provide informative answers to questions, although their accuracy may not always be perfect. The key difference is that Google Bard is trained on a dataset that includes text from the internet, while ChatGPT is trained on a dataset that includes text from books and articles. This means that Google Bard is more likely to be up-to-date on current events, while ChatGPT is more likely to be accurate in its responses to factual questions (AlZubi et al., 2022; Rahaman et al., 2023; Rudolph et al., 2023).
Benefits of Using a Chatbot for Education
You can foun additiona information about ai customer service and artificial intelligence and NLP. Six (16.66%) articles presented Chat GPT that exclusively operate on a mobile platform (e.g., phone, tablet). Examples include Rexy (Benedetto & Cremonesi, 2019), which helps students enroll in courses, shows exam results, and gives feedback. Another example is the E-Java Chatbot (Daud et al., 2020), a virtual tutor that teaches the Java programming language.
The rule-based chatbot only responds to the rules and keywords programmed (Sandoval, 2018), and therefore designing EC needs anticipation on what the students may inquire about (Chete & Daudu, 2020). Furthermore, a designer should also consider chatbot’s capabilities for natural language conversation and how it can aid instructors, especially in repetitive and low cognitive level tasks such as answering FAQs (Garcia Brustenga et al., 2018). As mentioned previously, the goal can be purely administrative (Chocarro et al., 2021) or pedagogical (Sandoval, 2018). First, the study only provides a description of the changes over time in articles related to chatbots in nursing education, as well as the distribution of regions and types of articles.
On the other hand, peer agents serve as learning mates for students to encourage peer-to-peer interactions. The agent of this approach is less knowledgeable than the teaching agent. Nevertheless, peer agents can still guide the students along a learning path.

The most important of those affordances is that chatbots can respond differently to each learner, depending on what they say or ask, so the experience adapts to the learner. This can increase the learner’s sense of agency and their ownership of the learning process. One of the most popular use cases for chatbots in education is helping with homework. These chatbots help students understand complex topics, provide step-by-step solutions, and offer tips for completing assignments. Studies that used questionnaires as a form of evaluation assessed subjective satisfaction, perceived usefulness, and perceived usability, apart from one study that assessed perceived learning (Table 11).
Chatbots in Customer Support
From the viewpoint of educators, integrating AI chatbots in education brings significant advantages. AI chatbots provide time-saving assistance by handling routine administrative tasks such as scheduling, grading, and providing information to students, allowing educators to focus more on instructional planning and student engagement. Educators can improve their pedagogy by leveraging AI chatbots to augment their instruction and offer personalized support to students.
Millions of people leverage various AI chat tools in their businesses and personal lives. In this article, we’ll explore some of the best AI chatbots and what they can do to enhance individual and business productivity. Because of that drawback, more businesses use rule-based chatbots, which are simpler — they can be built by using a platform — cheaper, and more controllable. This aspect is a challenge for designers and developers because it’s still difficult to create an AI chatbot that can deliver a consistent experience and predictable answers.
Guided analysis of how AI can affect your own courses and teaching practice, covering ethical issues, student success issues, and workload balance. You might first use the chatbot to help you define a project and break down the work into manageable chunks, then clarify the function or routine you want to work on. You might then use the chatbot to generate examples or suggest useful methods (Gewirtz, n.d.). Begin by telling the chatbot that you would like to develop a fictional short story and that you’d like its assistance in developing your ideas. Try different ways of interacting and responding to the chatbot to get a sense of its capabilities. ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, uses the Generative Pre-training Transformer (GPT) large language model.
- The wide accessibility of chatbots as virtual language tutors, regardless of temporal and spatial constraints, represents a substantial advantage over human instructors.
- Nevertheless, affective-motivational learning outcomes such as perception of learning, need for cognition, motivation, and creative self-efficacy were not influenced by ECs.
- For example, you might prompt the chatbot to create a realistic ethical dilemma that applies to the discipline or to role-play as a patient or client in a relevant scenario.
Students typically initiate the conversation with peer agents to look up certain definitions or ask for an explanation of a specific topic. Peer agents can also scaffold an educational conversation with other human peers. Much more than a customer service add-on, chatbots in education are revolutionizing communication channels, streamlining inquiries and personalizing the learning experience for users. For institutions already familiar with the conversational sales and support landscapes, harnessing the potential of chatbots could catapult their educational services to the next level. Here, you’ll find the benefits, use cases, design principles and best practices for chatbots in the education sector, predominantly for institutions or services focused on B2C interaction.
It enables customers to order a drink on the go and pick it up at a chosen cafe. It translates into a better brand experience because customers don’t have to stand in a long line. By doing this, the brand attracted users’ attention to their new ebook, Almanac.
In the Turing experiment, the person designated as a judge was chatting over a computer with a human and a machine who could not be seen. To the surprise of many, conversational interfaces aren’t a modern invention. They were born out of curiosity and creative thinking more than half a century ago. Check out our docs and resources to build a chatbot quickly and easily. Learn about how the COVID-19 pandemic rocketed the adoption of virtual agent technology (VAT) into hyperdrive. In your business, you need information about your customers’ pain points, preferences, requirements, and most importantly their feedback.
Try beginning the same way you would begin a chat conversation with a colleague or acquaintance. Gemini 1.0 Pro’s correct-answer rate, for instance, improved to 67 percent in responding to the same question a second time, eventually dropping to 63 percent, the report notes. Gemini is Google’s advanced conversational chatbot with multi-model support via Google AI.
Each step in the flow is a chatbot-initiated action that is customizable, e.g., informing prospects about the unique qualities of your learning programs. This question reflects on providing feedback on one aspect they have learned from their team that they probably would not have learned independently. 6, the illustration describes changes in each group (EC and CT) pre and post-intervention. First, teamwork showed an increasing trend for EC, whereas CT showed slight changes pre and post-intervention. We encourage you to organize your colleagues to complete these modules together or facilitate a workshop using our Do-it-yourself Workshop Kits on AI in education.
In some cases, the teaching agent started the conversation by asking the students to watch educational videos (Qin et al., 2020) followed by a discussion about the videos. In other cases, the teaching agent started the conversation by asking students to reflect on past learning (Song et al., 2017). Other studies discussed a scenario-based approach to teaching with teaching agents (Latham et al., 2011; D’mello & Graesser, 2013). The teaching agent simply mimics a tutor by presenting scenarios to be discussed with students. In other studies, the teaching agent emulates a teacher conducting a formative assessment by evaluating students’ knowledge with multiple-choice questions (Rodrigo et al., 2012; Griol et al., 2014; Mellado-Silva et al., 2020; Wambsganss et al., 2020).
Your bot, the d.bot, is a certain type of bot: a scripted bot. Describe what it does and where/how it’s being used.
On the other hand, Cunningham-Nelson et al. (2019) discussed how chatbots could be applied to enhance the student’s learning experience. The study by Pérez et al. (2020) reviewed the existing types of educational chatbots and the learning results expected from them. Smutny and Schreiberova (2020) examined chatbots as a learning aid for Facebook Messenger. Thomas (2020) discussed the benefits of educational chatbots for learners and educators, showing that the chatbots are successful educational tools, and their benefits outweigh the shortcomings and offer a more effective educational experience. Okonkwo and Ade-Ibijola (2021) analyzed the main benefits and challenges of implementing chatbots in an educational setting.
The brand’s bot also encouraged users to purchase the title by offering a 10% discount, which boosted its sales. Customers want their problems handled immediately and via the channels they prefer. Chatbots make that possible by redefining the customer service people have known for years. One of the brands that took their online service to the next level using a bot is Sephora. To breathe life into your bot in-house, you need to engage a team of developers or hire external bot-building services. For instance, companies launch click bots that deliberately generate fake clicks.
When prompting a chatbot, ask it “What more would you need to make this interaction better?” (Chen, 2023). This can in turn prompt you to give more specific details and instructions that can yield better results. That said, Apple may also introduce similar partnerships with other chatbots.
We noticed that within the first three months after the launch, the chatbot closed 36,886 cases without the need to transfer visitors to human agents. We also discovered that it was able to take care of 28.6% of our live chat communication. Let’s say you run an online store and you want to inform users about your delivery costs by using a rule-based chatbot. To do so, first you need to train your chatbot on how customers may ask for a delivery price — meaning what words and phrases they might use.
Any advantage of a chatbot can be a disadvantage if the wrong platform, programming, or data are used. Traditional AI chatbots can provide quick customer service, but have limitations. Many rely on rule-based systems that automate tasks and provide predefined responses to customer inquiries. Improve customer engagement and brand loyalty
Before the advent of chatbots, any customer questions, concerns or complaints—big or small—required a human response. Naturally, timely or even urgent customer issues sometimes arise off-hours, over the weekend or during a holiday.
How AI Chatbots Are Already Interfering In Elections
By harnessing the power of generative AI, chatbots can efficiently handle a multitude of conversations with students simultaneously. The technology’s ability to generate human-like responses in real-time allows these AI chatbots to engage with numerous students without compromising the quality of their interactions. This scalability ensures that every learner receives prompt and personalized support, no matter how many students are using the chatbot at the same time. Through interactive conversations, thought-provoking questions, and the delivery of intriguing information, chatbots in education captivate students’ attention, making learning an exciting and rewarding adventure.
In the EC group, there were changes in terms of how students identified learning from other individual team members towards a collective perspective of learning from the team. Similarly, there was also more emphasis on how they contributed as a team, especially in providing technical support. Concurrently, it was evident that the self-realization of their value as a contributing team member in both groups increased from pre-intervention to post-intervention, which was higher for the CT group. Moreover, individual personality traits such as motivation have also been found to influence creativity (van Knippenberg & Hirst, 2020) which indirectly influenced the need for cognition (Pan et al., 2020). Nevertheless, these nonsignificant findings may have some interesting contribution as it implies that project-based learning tends to improve these personality-based learning outcomes.
Similarly, Yang (2022) underscored the favourable views of AICs in English language education, with teachers valuing the chatbot’s capacity to manage routine tasks, thereby allowing them to concentrate on more substantial classroom duties. In this study, students appreciated the supplemental use of chatbots for their ability to provide immediate feedback on unfamiliar words or concepts, thereby enriching their English textbook learning. In this research, the term chatbot (AIC) is used to refer to virtual tutors integrated into mobile applications specifically designed for language learning to provide students with a personalized and interactive experience. These AICs may cover different aspects of language learning, such as grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and listening comprehension, and use various techniques to adapt to the user’s level of proficiency and tailor their responses accordingly.
The more the bot chats with your prospects, the more data it gains about their needs and preferences. By integrating into social media platforms, conversational interfaces let brands connect with many users and increase their brand awareness. The company has used a Messenger bot to carry out a daily quiz with users. Technological progress has radically changed the way people communicate. Face-to-face interactions have been largely replaced by online messaging. They must respond to customer questions around the clock and across multiple channels.
They offer adaptable content formats, such as audio, visual, and text-based materials, ensuring accessibility for all users, regardless of their needs. Juji chatbots can also read between the lines to truly understand each student as a unique individual. This enables Juji chatbots to serve as a student’s personal learning assistant or an instructor’s teaching assistant, to personalize teaching and optimize learning outcomes.
We also encourage you to access and use chatbots to complete some provided sample tasks. Jasper AI deserves a high place on this list because of its innovative approach to AI-driven content creation for professionals. By customizing educational content and generating prompts for open-ended questions aligned with specific learning objectives, teachers can cater to individual student needs and enhance the learning experience. Additionally, educators can use AI chatbots to create tailored learning materials and activities to accommodate students’ unique interests and learning styles. Educational chatbots (ECs) are chatbots designed for pedagogical purposes and are viewed as an Internet of Things (IoT) interface that could revolutionize teaching and learning. These chatbots are strategized to provide personalized learning through the concept of a virtual assistant that replicates humanized conversation. Nevertheless, in the education paradigm, ECs are still novel with challenges in facilitating, deploying, designing, and integrating it as an effective pedagogical tool across multiple fields, and one such area is project-based learning. Therefore, the present study investigates how integrating ECs to facilitate team-based projects for a design course could influence learning outcomes.
Chatbots can handle real-time actions as routine as a password change, all the way through a complex multi-step workflow spanning multiple applications. In addition, conversational analytics can analyze and extract insights from natural language conversations, typically between customers interacting with businesses through chatbots and virtual assistants. A chatbot is a computer program that simulates human conversation with an end user.
The datasets generated during and/or analyzed during the current study are available from the corresponding author on reasonable request. Seven general research questions were formulated in reference to the objectives. We wanted AI-powered features that were deeply integrated into the app and leveraged the gamified aspect of Duolingo that our learners love.
Thirdly, exploring the specific pedagogical strategies employed by chatbots to enhance learning components can inform the development of more effective educational tools and methods. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots in education has the potential to revolutionize how students learn and interact with information. One significant advantage of AI chatbots in education is their ability to provide personalized and engaging learning experiences. By tailoring their interactions to individual students’ needs and preferences, chatbots offer customized feedback and instructional support, ultimately enhancing student engagement and information retention. However, there are potential difficulties in fully replicating the human educator experience with chatbots. While they can provide customized instruction, chatbots may not match human instructors’ emotional support and mentorship.
